Curb rash before a lease turn-in: fix it or leave it?
Curb rash happens to almost everybody, and it is visible from outside the vehicle without bending down. That is exactly why it shows up on so many turn-in inspections.
Why wheels are always checked
A curbed wheel is visible, objective and easy to describe. Where a scratch calls for judgment, a scuff along a rim edge is simply there or not. And with four wheels the total adds up fast: two curbed wheels are two separate line items.
Three levels of damage
Surface scuff
Paint or clear coat marked on the rim edge, with no metal removed. The most common case and the simplest to treat: a refinisher sands, fills and repaints the area.
Metal removed
The alloy itself is bitten into, bare metal visible, the rim edge no longer smooth. Refinishing is still possible but requires building the edge back up first.
Bent or cracked
Vibration through the wheel, a slow loss of pressure, visible distortion. That is a safety matter, not a cosmetic one: the wheel gets replaced. Do not put a cosmetic refinish on a wheel you suspect.
Refinish or replace?
For the first two levels, wheel refinishing is a standard service, often done in a day and frequently mobile. It costs a fraction of a new OEM wheel.
That is what makes wheels worth handling before turn-in: excess wear schedules generally assume a repair through the dealer network, while an independent refinisher fixes the same defect for far less. It is one of the few items where the gap is clear-cut.
Three things to settle before you commit:
- The shop should guarantee a proper color match — one wheel that does not match the other three is obvious.
- Do all four if three are marked. Consistency is what gets noticed.
- Ask for an itemized invoice: it evidences a professional repair rather than a driveway fix.
While the wheels are off
- Tread depth above the minimum in your turn-in standard, which is often stricter than the state legal minimum.
- Matching tire sizes and, where required, a matching set on all four corners.
- Even wear across the full width of the tread — wear on one shoulder points at the alignment.
- The spare, compact spare or inflator kit still present.
Book early. Refinishers have lead times, and a wheel refinished the day before turn-in is still fragile.
